Episode Summary[]
The Planeteers are summoned to address a crisis in Venice that is plagued by pollution, structural damage, and a mutant rat infestation caused by Verminous Skumm. Observing its deteriorating condition, they split up into groups to gather more information. Wheeler and Linka explore the canals, while the other Planeteers investigate the buildings. Meanwhile, local pathologist, Risa Fellini ventures into a quarantined area to catch a rat for study, until she and her young relative, Pietre were being cornered by a group of large, yellow mutated rats. When the two Planeteers hear their cries for help, they came to the rescue. But, Pietre was already infected with sickness from one rat's bite. Next, they took him to the hospital, thus hoping he will get better soon. After going around the canal, Ma-Ti telepathically tells Wheeler, Linka, and Risa to meet them at Doge's Palace. Back in the palace, two normal rats were eating Skumm's fast-acting polluted cheese, which transforms them into mutants. Then, another one bites Ma-Ti and quickly infects him, too. With their teamwork, they loose the mutant rats, carry the sick Ma-Ti, and rush back to the hospital. By using his own heart ring, he shows Risa an image of a tropical plant that only grows in the rainforest with antitoxic properties to neutralize the pollution effects. While she works on the antidote, the team learns how Skumm mutates the rat population through contaminated canal water mixed in processed cheese. Once the rats eat the toxic cheese, they can mutate, act aggressive, and infect everyone who comes anywhere near them. Thanks to Risa's antitoxin, Ma-Ti and the other patients got cured. Now, the Planeteers chase Skumm running around inside the hospital with his out-of-control rats. Outside the hospital, they follow the big and small mutated rats into Skumm's hideout, where he plans to release formula torpedoes in the polluted canal, fill it with more toxic cheese, and put every infected rat under his control. They summon Captain Planet after done washing their rings. Planet destroys the hideout, cleans up the canal, removes the toxic cheese, and disposes of it. Skumm, the Rat Pack, and the infected rats leave Venice for good.
Planeteer Alerts[]
- First Planeteer Alert

Gi: Venice is beautiful.
Kwame: But pollution is destroying this Renaissance heritage.
Linka: The climate here has accelerated the effects of pollution, so other cities will face the same problems.
Wheeler: The good news is that Venice is using new restoration techniques to clean up and preserve their heritage.
Captain Planet: But the only real way to solve the problem is to stop pollution for good. As always, the power is yours!
- Second Planeteer Alert
Captain Planet: Every year, tons of toxic waste are dumped into rivers, lakes and streams.
Gi: Much of it comes from people's homes.
Wheeler: So to clean up Earth's water, clean up your act!
Ma-Ti: Do not dump chlorine, bleach, solvents, or other toxic materials down your drain.
Linka: And keep things like motor oil and batteries out of your trash!
Kwame: To find an appropriate site to dump these toxic materials, contact your local sanitation department.
Captain Planet: The power is yours!
Significant Moments and Facts[]

- Wheeler makes subtle references to Disney's Ratatouille, before the movie was made.
Quotes[]
- Gaia: Those rats aren't normal. I suspect foul play.
- Kwame: Or a *rodent* at play.
- Verminous Skumm: [seeing the tape] Oh, rats! Eco-idiots!
- Rat Guard: Trouble, Mr. Skumm?
- Verminous Skumm: You might say that, but it's trouble for them!
- Kwame: I read that the Doge's Palace has not changed in a thousand years.
- Gi: Well, the way it's going, it won't last another ten.
- Kwame: [a piece of stone falls from the roof] Look out! [shoves Ma-Ti and Gi ahead but trips on an uneven piece of pavement himself]
- Gi: Kwame! Water! [draws a column of it from the canal to blast the rock away from him]
- Kwame: [stands] Thanks, Gi. When you said Venice was falling apart, I did not think you meant so soon.
- Verminous Skumm: [to his fellow rats] Quit bugging me, you cheddar-heads! I don't HAVE any cheese on me!
- Wheeler: Now we can go take care of some unfinished business. Namely, Verminous Scumm and his rats.
- Nurse: Doctor! The hospital basement! It's overrun with rats!
- Wheeler: At least we don't have to go too far.
- Verminous Skumm: I'll turn you into shredded mozzarella!
- Wheeler: [a group of large mutant rats leap through the wall of flame he created] What the-? Hey, you're crazy!
- Kwame: Looks like we have a reception committee.
- Wheeler: Yeah. And I don't think they wanna shake hands.
- Gi: Water! [the filthy canal-water on it prevents her ring from activating a hose]
- Gi: Huh? Darn! What do we...
- Ma-Ti: [runs over and turns on the nozzle] Ha ha ha! Water!
- Gi: [grinning, embarrassed and relieved] Oh. Yeah.
- Captain Planet: Uh-oh. Processed cheese. Not my favorite food. [bends the bridge's legs so the toxic-cheese-filled torpedoes slide up them in an arc then shoot back in the opposite direction]
- Captain Planet: Sorry, Skumm, but I'm on a cheese-free diet.
- Verminous Skumm: Not that supercilious superhero! This is the worst thing that could happen! [glances behind to see the torpedoes shooting toward his hideout]
- Verminous Skumm: I was wrong - it's not the worst! This is!
- Wheeler: You hungry, Pietre? You wanna do lunch?
- Pietre: Yes. Just so long as it's not grilled cheese. [everyone laughs]
